Spend a while in my head
Come see what's inside me
Learn of things that I've not said
You don't know my story
You don't know why I cry
You don't why I can't sleep
Why I struggle to try
You've not walked in my footsteps
You've not experienced my pain
You've not had forced hands upon you
Damaging your brain
You stand there and stare at me
With your judegmental eyes
You see what you want to
But what you see is lies
In truth I'm a person
I'm a person like you
Who's innocence was stolen
By someone I knew
They were meant to have loved me
They should have taught me right & wrong
They were meant to protect me
Instead I was abused my childhood long
Now I hear voices
They reside in my head
They tell me I'm nothing
That I'd be better off dead
I am working so hard
To get the life I deserve
But the journeys a rough one
There's just so many curves
So next time when you see me
So next time when you see me
Please don't judge what you see
Just pause for a moment
Ponder what my story may be!

I wrote this to encourage people to alter or at least question how they think. I ask them to make a concious efffort not to make assumptions & judge others.
Please take a moment to remember that every living person has a story and sometimes those storied are filled with darkness and gloom. It is something that a majority of us would struggle even to imagine.
So next time:
When you see that man walking down the street with shabby clothes & a dirty face please don't laugh. (He may have been abused by a family member since he was 3, his parents may have belted him everyday of his childhood, he may never have had good role modelling to learn life skills from)
Please don't laugh at the lady sitting in the park who is nursing a doll & talking to herself. (She may have lost a baby and suffered a reactive psychosis, she may be enacting the sort of love she never had, she may be role playing the motherhood role that she will never experience)
Or the manic man pacing up & down the mall yelling at someone who isn't there. (He may have been abused by his own father from the age of 12, he may have been repeatedly told he was worthless & would amount to nothing)
There are many reasons why people act they way they do. I've worked with the adults whom were the victims of ongoing sexual abuse and often these alter personalities are the only reason they still exist. They are the survivors of a cruelty that many of us will ever know.
This doesn't just apply to children of abuse but to anyone that may appear different in this world because they all have a unique story.

there is much suffering in this world -- at the hands of mankind,,, it is up to each person to have compassion & empathy at every opportunity to help ease the suffering of others.

Wow. That is a powerful statement. The picture fits perfectly for the post.
ReplyDeletesmiles...this is excellent katherine...we should always challenge what we think, esp in regard to people...there are stories behind each...
ReplyDeleteOh yes...always react in love. Amen.
ReplyDeletethis is wonderful...so many times people make a snap judgement without knowing anything about the person or their life....if wwe could just step back and look at them with compasion the world would be so much better...
ReplyDeletebeautiful write my friend
Very powerful statement, in deed. (editor in me says check Footsteps in line 9)
ReplyDeleteJoanny, sadly this is very true, there is much suffering in this world and a little compassion can go a long way. Thanks for your comment.
ReplyDeleteHi Otin..thank you. It is something that always bothered me. I work in the disability sector & my special area of interest is mental health. It is really quite horrid how people in the community treat & view people with mental illness. They just don't understand, there is such a lack of awareness around mental illness, yet it is quite prevelant. Have a great weekend Otin.
Thank you Brian I am grateful of your comment as I am sure you would see & experience much of the same through your area of work. Have a wonderful weekend.
Betsy .. I haven't a doubt in my mind that you always do, you're such a beautiful person.
David.. what you say is so true. A smile costs us nothing in the scheme of things but a smile shared with another person whom may need it very much, can mean the world.
Hi Monkey Man..thank you! And thank you also for the headsup on my typo, very much appreciated & all fixed up now. Have a wonderful weekend Monkey!
Kath: I love your attitude. I wish the whole world had it.
ReplyDeleteThank you .. I do too! Fortunately there are many good people out there making a difference though & I've met some of these people in Blogger; people such as yourself! Have a wonderful weekend JJ :)
