Autumn on the River, 1889, John Singer Sargent
She felt a little less pain & a little less depressed out here on the river. Being here helped her mind to relax; to remain in the moment. For the first time she wasn't thinking about how terrible she'd been feeling, nor about how long it was going to take to recuperate. Her only wish was that she could sit up. She was still much too weak to do that, it hadn't been that long since she'd had her surgery.
Her husband was a devoted, loving man & he didn't want her special day to pass without celebrating her beautiful, wonderful life. She meant the whole world to him.
She lay back against the feathered down quilt that he had so lovingly prepared for her and he propped her up with a pillow. He kissed her softly in the middle of her forehead and said, "This is your day my love & I want you to relax and enjoy each and every second of it"
Autumn was her favourite time of the year, especially out on the river and he knew that.
The river banks were lined with tall golden trees, she could see them extending their branches upward toward the sky like arms reaching up to the sun. The crisp, amber leaves were fluttering down gently; some landing upon the water, others falling into the boat around her one even landing to kiss her face. Being able to feel the crunchiness of the leaves, made this time all the more special.
They drifted out further to the lake. Big white billowy clouds were drifting above her & boy she loved watching the clouds. She invited her husband to lay down beside her to play the cloud guessing game. He joined her, snuggling under the blanket and it didn't take long before they were both lost in the sky, which is just what he had planned. Today she was thinking of nothing but now!
